Celebrating my friend’s birthday, so he brought along 2 bottles of 1971 wines of which it is getting increasingly difficult to source for, so I’d be happy to drink a 50 year old matured Bordeaux, pretty much drinking at it’s peak bottle age. Drinking right next to a Cos d’Estournel 1971 and Haut Brion 1982, first impression was the poorest performing bottle amongst the three. However, don’t jump to conclusion till you read my notes to the end. Bouquet of slight vegetal and green capsicum. Content wasn’t stunning, somehow with slightly elevated acidity and short finishing, not very harmonious feel. The saving grace was that it has staying power, it was way ahead of Cos d’Estournel 1971 and still holding up in the glass towards the end of the dinner, of course no comparison to Haut Brion 1982 holding power, but for a 50 year old Bordeaux, it’s very impressive effort already!
